Shalyn, one of our amazing teen volunteers, recommends The Maze Runner by James Dashner.
One of the most popular YA series on the shelves right now is The Maze Runner, written by James Dashner. As the first in the series of four, protagonist Thomas wakes up in a world where he only knows his first name. The space around him is just a black box, darkness surrounding him for what seems like an eternity, until it finally opens to what young men tell him is the Glade. With different working jobs, such as butcher, farmer, and chef, the Glade is a fully operating community, with two dozen or so teenage men working day in and day out. The main reason why they work so hard is because they are trapped inside of a maze, with no end in sight. The walls shift each day, making it hard to create a straight and followable path for what they call the Runners to follow. Thomas comes into the Glade a newbie, or as the refer to it in the Glade, “Greenie”. As soon as he arrives, however, things start changing around the Glade. It finally climaxes to a girl showing up, the first ever, with a terrible message for the Gladers. Thomas seems to be the only option to save the Gladers, and the incredible, action-packed novel is worth the read. The Scorch Trials, The Death Cure, and The Kill Order are the three other books in the series to follow The Maze Runner, and having read the next two, and starting the last, the suspense and action seem to never stop. Make sure you get your hands on a copy before the movie releases, which is set for September 19th, 2014!
